Looking for thoughts on Breeder loan

I have read some threads about people doing breeder loans. I am planning on starting to breed next season but my little pastel won't be ready this season. I have a friend who bread last season and will be again this season and I am thinking about asking him if he'd be interested in a breeder loan this season with one of his males and my normal girl. So yeah I'm looking for thoughts and suggestions if I were to do it, also I'd love to hear from nay sayers.

Id say no. No need to rush into breeding pastels to normals. Wait a little longer and do it yourself for a rewarding feeling

ide have to aggree with RichsBallPythons, no need to rush on that project. i do have breed loans going on on. it really comes down to a trust issue. joe and i do not have any paper work to record the loan. but weve know each other for a while. if your doing a loan with someone you dont know that well ide put it in writing.

Im pretty against breeder loans, instead I will do a flat fee for studding an animal under certain circumstances (proper qt time pf a customers animal, etc.) but my animal stays in my possession. Under no circumstances will I accept payment for a "could be" animal in the clutch as I have no idea of the outcome of that clutch. I also will have the customer to sign a waiver that releases me of all liability of their animal while under my care. For example, their snake deceases for no no apparent reason, becomes egg bound etc.,

Re: Looking for thoughts on Breeder loan

It was something I just thought of today and it wouldn't be to a pastel it would be to a mojave, but I don't think I'm going to do it was just a thought and wanted some feedback. If there are others feel free to continue to comment.

Everybody can be friends till money gets involved...... I am not trying to be rude, a big female norm breeding to a mojo can make you both a little money if your lucky(it will be fun and the experience never hurts...thats the most important part on something like this...) But just so friends can stay friends and there are no hard feelings get whatever you agree to written down and sighned by the both of you...... It is ultimatly what ever the 2 of you are okay with, but having a simple contract is just to keep anyone from feeling like they were done dirty... just my $.02

Re: Looking for thoughts on Breeder loan

If you move forward - ESPECIALLY amongst friends, good friends, a contract is highly recommended. Nothing worse than a mis-understanding to destroy a friendship.

My contracts have always outlined the replacement value of the animal that's not in the original owner's care, should it die in the other person's care and the length of time needed to pay that restitution.

What happens if your large female were to die in your friend's care? What do you place as her replacement value? Who's going to be responsible for vet care if your animal gets sick in your buddy's care? All those things need to be spelled out in the contract if you decide to move forward.

Breeding loans can be benificial but as stated before get it in writing! Also take into account are you going to breed your female 2yrs in a row? Or will you breed her to the loaner and then to your pastel the next year. (nothing really wrong with it just something you need to thing about I have not had girls breed more than 2yrs in a row) What if you breed your female to the male she doesn't lay eggs. Then she comes home to your house and you breed her net year to your pastel and when she lays eggs you hatch mojaves and normals? Who's babies are they then?

This can happen and it has happened to me. I bred a mojo and a yellowbelly to a 3 yr old normal that had never laid eggs I picked up late 2009. I bred her late and she laid in August 2010. When the babies hatched they where spiders. I never put a spider in her tub.

Last season 2008-09 I bred my spider male to a normal female that was bred to a pastel the year before (by me). She laid eggs and I hatched pastels. So it is something to keep in mind.

if you know the person and know their collection and have a well drawn up contract, i say go for it. my biggest fear would be allowing a snake from someone elses collection near mine or my snake near theirs. QT is great but how do you know if they are following the right steps or even if they are QT in general? too risky for me to chance unless I was close friends with the person and know their snakes and no way would I let it happen if someone kept getting new snakes in.
