Any het red experts out there?

I do not see any het red in that female.

Given I am not an "expert" but your Lesser male, could have something else going on with him.

I'm with Pat on this one. It might just be the lighting in the pic, but the lesser looks like it has a lot more chance of having some surprise morph mixed in than the normal does.

I didn't think so either, until I saw this het red at Ralph Davis's site, fourth picture from the left, showing a het red with a red axanthic.

I'm still not finding a picture of a het red hatchling looking like an axanthic... every picture I've found shows them with full color, including Ralph Davis's out of the egg pics on his birthing records.

I'm no expert, however when het reds come out of the egg they look...well....axanthic. And gain color as they age.
But, that baby does look cool, I say do the pairing again and see what happens.

I've never noticed a het red axanthic looking axanthic at any stage. They do have a 'different' looking color at hatchling but I wouldn't call it axanthic, more like a different shade of brown then normal.

It may be I suppose, I had assumed it was showing the two forms together. I've emailed both Corey and Ralph asking what they think, but I don't really expect Corey to respond -- he had an auto-reply set up saying so.

When in doubt, breed it out! I figure I'll breed him back to his mother along with a couple other normal girls to see if he reproduces himself, worst case scenario I end up with a couple clutches of lessers, nothing wrong with that!

Well, Ralph got back to me and said it doesn't look quite like the het red lessers that he's hatched out, but there's definitely influence from the mother. Looks like this is a puzzle that will have to wait until he's ready to breed.

As a side note, the final tally for this clutch was 2.2 lessers, 1.0 normal, and an odd normal that may have been under developed due to a knotted umbilicus and didn't survive.

As Pat stated, I would talk to Corey Woods. He is the man when it comes to Het Reds. Keep in mind that Het Reds are just that, Het Red Axanthic. They are a codom and some can be very subtle. If you ask me, I think they are one of the codoms that can be the hardest to pick out sometimes. On the flip side, I'm gonna go out on a limb here and say those look like some Het Reds that I have seen. The whole black back thing going on and the squiggly marks also. Keep us posted. I'm curious to see what the final verdict is.
