Just got my heat mat and digital thermometer, how should I set it up?

What I received was a zoo med heat mat 5x7 and a hydra farm digital thermometer, should I set the probe for the temperature on the heat pad or on the plastic where my hotspot will be?

Also I was holding my baby ball python earlier for the second time and hes really gotten comfortable being around me, he didnt even want to go back in his cage. I was changing his bedding and everytime Id lift the lid he would slowly try to get out. Is that normal?

The thermostat probe belongs directly on the heat mat (not in the enclosure) and the thermometer probe goes on the enclosure floor in the center of the heat mat (inside the enclosure)

Yeah it's normal. They are very curious. I can't feed F/T to my male cause he needs a zombie dance and is more interested in getting out when I have the top off.
