Buy a Pastel now or wait?

So the plan was this summer to buy a morph with my heart set on a female spider bp. But After waiting all summer and still no call I decided agaisnt the idea because I am leaving for college Aug 17. Now I will be 3 hrs away and MY dad is going to take care of my now almost 2 yr old male bp. Which I have a detailed caresheet in the making. He knows how much Xander means to me so Im pretty positive he will take great care of him. I will be home every month to 2 months and 6 weeks for Xmas break.

Well while at the exotic store this past week to get a rat the owner showed me Spiders and Pastel babies. So gorgeous. Especially the pastel It was super smokin!! Only 130$ for a female that has amazing color. I talked to the owner and he suggested that because I want to eventually breed after im done with college that he suggested a pastel is a great starter for breeding.
Im torn honestly. Part of me wants to snatch the Pastel up and run lol And the other part of me is telling myself to wait.

Money isnt the issue its mainly the fact that Every summer Im planning on getting a new morph to my collection and the whole moving to college.
I wanted to start with a pastel this summer So i cld get a Mojave next summer. Or possibly another pastel. Or a beautiful spider!

I'm going to be in the store prob very soon to get my 8 rats for my snake so I can freeze em.

So what should I do. I value everyone's opinion.

Well if your into breeding, it takes time especially for a female to get to proper size. If money isnt an issue, why not get a spider like you originally wanted? Or go with the Pastel. Why not a mojave instead of the other two? All are roughly in the same ball park price range. All im saying is sooner you get one the better. Any of the three will be a great addition to the collection. Im shopping around right now for some of the morphs i have listed in my sig which are basically same as yours. Id at least like to get a Het Albino pair and a Mojave right now.

Yea thats why Im very torn on whether to get it now because. It can take a female up to 4 yrs to get to breeding size.

I'm just rlly concerned as to whether I should get it when I wont be the primary careholder. And am gnna be at college.

I think the Mojave was like 280 at my pet store.
    And no female spiders :[
but the pastel female was only 130$ :]

You can breed a lot of things w a pastel to get awesome morphs. And there is a super form of that and not a spider

Re: Buy a Pastel now or wait?

I would say first off ask your Dad's opinion as he will now be the primary care taker, meaning his opinion should very much so be valued. He may not want the responsibilities of caring for two snakes, rather than just one. Also, you may want to tell him your full plan while you are at it, getting a snake every summer, then breeding when you graduate. Since you live with him still, he makes the rules, sorry if that is not a good thing.

Second, my honest opinion is to say wait. If you are not planning on breeding until you graduate, the prices will be coming down even more by then. Who knows, for $130 two to four years from now you could be looking at getting a bee, pastave, or probably even a breeding size pastel female by then.

Dont buy more snakes if you wont be caring for them yourself. It will add stress to your father who will be caring ffor them while you're away and you increase the risk of sad news. Avoid buying new snakes until you are more stable and can care for them personally or allow another herper to care for them.

Well they were going to let me get my spider at the beginning of the summer So..... lol

Now they are like "no" But you see the bad thing is they don't take the breeding thing seriously. They think Im going through a phase and that Imma come back from college and want to immediatly give my bp away. Which is so not true. Snakes are my guilty pleasure and make me way happier than they shld be lol

The story with how I got my first bp was I just sorta one day brought it home and was like "Look what I got!" I didnt ask them because I knw they wldnt have said yes. As bad as it sounds I cld easily do that again even though I wouldnt.

The price going down again is another factor!! ahhh! too many things to consider.

Re: Buy a Pastel now or wait?

Well my friend offered to do it and she has a huge RTB and a Ballpython.
But I didnt want to do that in case we lose touch and I might never get my baby back.

And plus my dad was like "I'm going to do it" Which was a surprise considering he had refused until that point. Haha i even told him He has to handle him at least once a week. Or I'll give him hell. lol

Hes like "I dont want you to be worrying about your snake when you are at college and I knw how much he means to you"

Definately wait until you are more stable, any animal is a resposiblity and the more you add the greater the responsibility, also you may end up losing intrest once your off to college.

That is true. My sister was big into horses but once she went to college it went to nothing. Wait till you get more stability. Maybe an apartment at/around college and make a snake rack.

You know, I got my first snake the same way you did, and my parents didn't care because I took care of it, but I never went to college either. Now, I currently have 10 ball pythons, and I will be breeding this season. My Mom on one hand, loves the snakes, and is really getting into it. My Dad on the other hand thinks I am crazy to have so many and to put out the kind of money I am on them, but he put out $1,000 on a dog and snakes live longer, so "ha" on him. My parents are divorced by the way, but that doesn't mean I don't take their opinions into consideration, and they never have to care for my snakes, it is 100% my job.

I am only saying, with you going to college, and leaving your Dad as the care taker, with more and more snakes, he may get tired of it quick and make you get rid of them. I know my parents would have, hell, my Mom likes the snakes, but she don't want to be bother taking care of them. Also, like I said before, you have to think about the price drops. By the time you graduate, your pastel/mojave/spider, whatever you decide, may not be worth much by then. And, if that is to happen, you would be able to afford a double/triple gene morph. As well, you may get a good job and be able to afford something real nice by the time you graduate! There are a lot of things to consider, and I hope you do.
