Help... First mouse bite!
While feeding my 10 month old BP today (Live mouse) Everything seemed fine until he started to unwrap himself from the mouse and I realized the mouse’s teeth were stuck into the side of my BP’s head/upper neck. Before I could get in with my tongs to remove the mouse, my BP wiggled him off. He swallowed the mouse in about 2-3 minutes as usual. I’m very scared because when my BP (Stoli) unwrapped himself and got the mouse off he twitched a little bit, which I have never seen a snake do. Stoli twitched again (near the wound) and then swallowed. All seemed fine during swallowing. I noticed a little blood on the side of his head but nothing actually came out (there was no blood dripping). Again, the wound was very, very small, bit I am so worried and I’m not sure exactly what to do? I could tell immediately after swallowing that Stoli wanted to go back into his tank (I feed him in a separate enclosure) so I gently put him back in and he went off to hide as he normally does. He is an Albino, so when I say it didn’t look bad, it really didn’t because everything shows on the Albino. I don’t want to take him out of his tank because I usually wait at least 24 hours after feeding. What should I do? How worried should I be? Is there anything I can do? Any help would be appreciated!! Thanks! -Jenny

Re: Help... First mouse bite!
There is not too much you can do! If it is just a dot of blood then I would not worry too much. Just keep an eye on it and it should go away after the next shed. If you are really worried, you can go to a vet and get a antibiotic shot!

Just keep it clean so it doesn't get infected and it will heal with the next shed or two.

Re: Help... First mouse bite!
Ive had my boy bit one time, where it looked like a scab. I put neosporin on his cut. They told me the worst thing that can happen is that he will have a scar or might not have a scale in that spot. Thats not what happend, he's all good now you cant even tell he got bit. Most snakes get bit when killing prey, its when they get bit and they are not hungry that things can go bad IMO.

I guess if you follow up on other threads on other forums youd have your answer already.
likei stated before-
Vet is not needed on small rodent bites. Mice cant do much damage at all.
Buy a bottle of betadine like $10 and a tube of polysporin $5 and use that 3 times daily to keep it clean. And it will heal up fast

Re: Help... First mouse bite!
For any topical trauma a short bath with a splash of povidine iodine cant hurt to clean the wound. For topical treatment I use silver sulfadizine or a triple antibiotic ointment (clear only). Neosporin is fine as long as it is clear and not white (ingredients for pain).

Re: Help... First mouse bite!
Thanks to everyone! I pulled him out today and he seemed to be just fine. I inspected the wound, and I could barely even tell it was there. He didn't throw up the mouse and he wasn't twitching or anything. He also, didn't seem too upset to be removed from his hide.
I did dab a tiny bit of neosporin on the wound and I will continue to check him. He let me touch his head and tend to the wound, it's almost like he knew I was trying to help it.
I am a first time owner and I really appreciate everybody's help. So far, I have been very lucky and everything that is "supposed" to happen (ex. shedding, eating, pooping, hiding, utilizing all hides, mild temperament, etc) has happened with the (from what I've read and researched) desired outcome!
I would like to switch to F/T but I will attempt to figure that out via other threads! Thanks again!

Re: Help... First mouse bite!
Like everyone has already said (just by my glancing) keep the enclosure clean. You can also apply Neosporin without added pain killer to the wound if you feel the need. My snake got bit in the eye, and after a hour or so of crying I finally came to my sense's and got my act together. After waiting the 24 hours (cuz it was right after feeding to) I took her out, held her securely but safely and gently applied the neosporin. She's in shed right now, so I'll see what her eye looks like after. But I know the swelling went down a lot on it. Don't stress it. A little bite won't be to much of a big deal. I've been told they can heal from amazing things, and I'm sure they can. I personally would suggest switching from live to f/t and see how that goes. But that's just how I feel. I knew that something would happen one day, and I knew that the day it would, I would take my girl off live and try to give her f/t. I haven't fed her yet, but I have my fingers crossed it will go rather well for her. Anyways, that's just what I have to say, and I hope everyone's advice helps. And like I said before, don't stress it. It was an accident and I'm sure he'll be fine. =]
