Peed 4 times in 4 days
Hello,
I have an adult bp that has peed 4 times in the last 4 days. I am getting really sick of taking him and all of his stuff into the shower with me! I know this is not normal- should I be concerned?
Twice it was large amounts of hard urates, and twice just little bit (could have mistaken it as from my much younger bp, if it wasn't in the wrong cage!).
The only change in his diet lately is that he came off of feeding for about 2-3 months, and just started eating again. First time we got him to eat a medium rat, and this time gave him a large. He'd been going to the bathroom the entire time he wasn't accepting food, so I don't understand the problem. Is this a sign of anything?

Well, you shouldn't be feeding anything larger then a medium rat and I hope it was a f/t for your snakes sake. Small rats are the biggest you should go. I have a monster female that eats mediums every now and then, but most of the time there just small rats. A large is probably really not a good idea either. Especially a male being that they are significantly smaller most of the time. And again, IF you are going to feed larger prey item I HIGHLY recommend that you feed f/t or p/k. And remember to feed once every 7 days.
What bedding are you using that you have to clean the ENTIRE cage out whenever he releases uric acid? I use cypress mulch which works good in terms of soaking up all that nasty stuff. I spot clean routinely but sometimes they just bury it in the bedding and I don't even see it, so I don't have to spot clean. I replace the bedding once a month. I used to use paper towels as that seems to be getting popular now, but I honestly hate them lol. I find that when a snake "goes" on paper towel you know about it. I remember walking into my room and smelling snake urates and being like well so much for paper towels lol.
As for it being weird I wouldn't worry about it. As long as the snake is eating and you aren't witnessing loose runny stools, (And I'm talking about their poop not the uric acid) I wouldn't worry about it at all. Good Luck!!

Passing hard urates is an indication that he could have been somewhat dehydrated. Proper urates should have the consistency of toothpaste (mmmm, minty fresh) Hard urates can be difficult to pass and can build up. Fortunately you've stumbled upon a time honored herpers trick of soaking your snake in warm water to help with passing these. Soaking or showering your snake in lukewarm water can help get things going again if you're concerned that things could be blocked up.
However, I am a little bemused that you feel the need to bring the snake into the shower with you whenever they drop a load. Perhaps you can post of picture of you showering with your snake so I can better understand what you mean? But seriously, most animals snakes included, like their homes to smell like themselves. It makes them feel more secure. There is no need to be so assiduously clean and doing so may even be somewhat stressful for your animal. snakes live in a world of smell and if their surroundings don't smell familiar it can make them feel more insecure.

I'm sorry, I misspoke. When I said hard urates I only meant to differentiate between the white stuff and the liquid. They were not unusually hard.
This particular snake is my fiance's, staying with me for the summer. It has reptile carpet, which I will not change as it is his choice. The snake got washed each time because each time he peed in his hide, then remained there on top of it. He was covered in it, and both he and all of his stuff went in because it is simply easier for me to wash it that way.
To Animals as Leaders: The rats are frozen, and perhaps they are labeling smaller rats as large, because I am buying by his diameter. These "large" rats are the same size as he is, and I am under the impression that that is fine, regardless of what the label calls it.

That reptile carpet is worthless. It will hold bacteria and make everything stinky i would throw it away.
