if you can find nice straight ones that are not warped, bowed or twisted. good luck.
I bought kiln dried douglas fir 10' x 2" x 8" from lowes and ripped to dimenision.
1.0 pastel 100% Het Orange Hypo
1.0 spider
1.2 Butter
0.1 super pastel
0.1 black back pastel
0.1 lemon pastel
1.2 FIRE
0.1 PINSTRIPE

I would get the 2x4's but i don't have a table saw.Also the 2x2's here aren't half bad.

I built my rat racks out of 1x2 furring strips... I used the arbreptiles.com design. Just had to change the dimensions slightly to compensate for the thinner pieces of wood. And I believe my tubs are a bit different.
With tubs and rats in them they're very sturdy.
1x2's I picked the straightest ones I could find, made my cuts strategically, and then when put together they all kinda pull each other straight.
