Pick your favorite morphs and find the best examples of them you can afford. I'd get male hets of beautiful parents, and a bunch of normal females. Course, I'm poor...

I think its really hard to know if hets are from beautiful parents. Plus with hets you run the chance they are not hets, the gene doesn't show, etc. Its a gamble with hets. I rather gamble with better odds with a genetically showing pair. I always say go with a co-dom and some normal females. If you guys want to grow out your collection from there so be it. Right now I have 5 normal females. 4 will be ready to go this coming Nov. I have my male pewter (which cost me $750 - ya i know pricey), vanilla, and possibly my mojave if I'm lucky ready for the girls. Not to mention my pastel female will be ready to go.

A nice afforable pair of orange/yellow bellys could serve you well too. I got my pair for $350, so its not totally out of budget.

    Re: He said what ????

I'd also purchase from a reputable breeder.

Well, that's my plan anyway. I like the base morphs. They're simple and have good odds. A lot of triple hets look messy to me. And are 1/81 for full visual? I plan on getting simple morphs from reputable breeders that should grow up to look really nice. Maybe throw a few things together down the line, but that's waaaaaay down the line for me. Also, the basic morphs can't drop much more in value.

It mostly depends on what you like and what you wanna make and what you can afford.

I guess I do see what you're saying. 50% chance the offspring are hets, then 50% that those hets are female or vice versa. 25% chance you're breeding the right thing back to the parent, then 25% chance of getting a visual from a simple recessive if all that goes through. That's a 6.25% chance of it all going right from the get-go. The more females you have improve your odds. Not technically, but gives you more to play them. Your chances get better every year you get breedable females. Sell off the males as possibles.

I know the odds are long and it'll take a long time, but it's easy on the wallet and probably really satisfying in the long run.

When you start breeding you have to always have some sort of plan. My distributor will buy the babies off of me, but heres the catch; he only will by showing offspring. Any hets would be sold as normals; not a lot of coin in your pocket for you efforts to get them to breed. From what I see, a lot of distributors do that because they don't want the liability of it not proving out.

If you can't sell your hets to a distributor, your left with no option but to try to sell online or keep them. Anyone can tell you that breeding ball pythons is not such an simple task. It takes a lot of preparing and bulking up for the breeding season (because the snakes going off feed), not to mention rotation and trying to have them feed once they are in the breeding cycle. Its alot of work for possibilities.

Talk it over with your husband and decide on a flexible plan. I say that because once the flair to breed bps is in your head, theres no way its getting out of there without a fight lol.

Did ya give him a big ole kissaroonie!!

Congrats...that is what we are working on slowly. I personally buy the actual morph...more expensive...but I love going out and picking out a (to me) perfect morph and watching them grow.
