ok um...is the probe waterproof? wont the snakes pee irritate the probe if it underneath the substrate & cause the temp/humidity readings to be off?

considering I have one in a fish tank completely under water I would say its waterproof.

The device itself is what will measure the humidity. The probe will moniter the temp. You will have 3 reading on the screen. An indoor temp (the device), humidity (the device), outdoor temp (the probe). This is why you put the whole thing in your tank. The device on the cool end to measure humidity and cool temp. The probe on the hot end, under substrate, on UTH, to measure hot side. If you have enough wetness under the substrate to make the probe go bad then something is very wrong. The slight dampness after a snake goes pee or spills a little water, will not harm anything as long as its not 100% humidity for days and days.

The probe is water proof anyway. Well at least water resistant. I took mine apart to do the external hack thats listed in the DIY section, and the probe is glued in its casing with a hot glue gun. Only the Humidity sensor is not water proof I think, but once I get my enclosure finished and the wires ran, I'm going to be water proofing it as best I can.

okay so I was using the little dialog thermostats and I was thinking everything was okay. I recently switch to a Weather Channel Hygrometer and Thermostat combination for $25.00 from walmart and I am shocked. Things are not were they are suppose to be my humidity is like 41% but my temp of the entire habitat is correct its at 80F so I'm happy for that. Thanks to everyone for their warnings I would recommend Weather Channel and I have heard Acu-Rite is good.

My probe measures everything for me cause they have to be at least 5 feet away from each other.

There really isn't a good one that is cheap. I use the cheap digital ones from walmart for a reference. If I put them side by side I get different readings. Your best bet is to use one of these for a reference and your snake shedding will tell you if what you been keeping your humidity at is good enough.
