Contagious Scale rott?
I have had my ball pythons since December. I am up to 10 snakes now, and i haven't had any health problems with any of them at all up until now. A few weeks back my gf's ball python started to get scale rot, which in the end required her snake to recieve shots for a period of time. I bought a het pied male for her on Feb 25th. I had the snake in my care for at least a month and a half, and when she took the snake to her house it started to get scale rot too. We have checked the temperatures, humidity, substrate and cleaned out the tanks on a daily basis but they still got scale rot. When she left on a cruise I took the H.pied into my care and cleaned its belly with iodine then rubbed thermezene on the belly. I was doing this for a about week and still now improvement but all the scales stoped falling off and he went threw shed and got better. But then i started to notice on 1 of my babies that there were 2 thick brown scab like patches under her mouth that looked like dried wax. I had bought some antibiotics and applied it to her and it seemed as though it was getting better. Then one day i come home and top layer of her belly scales were almost completely gone. Then the next day i started to notice it on all the other snakes as well. Even the two ball pythons i have in a entirely separate room are starting to get it. I haven't changed anything as far as handling my snakes since i first got them. I always sanitize before I handle each of them. There have been some occurrences of prolonged exposure to feces and urine, but no more than there has ever been since i got them. My main concern is that ALL of them contracted it within the same week, in a consecutive order ( about 1 every half day or so). Pls help i am very concerned about the health of all my snakes and i am trying to arrange vet visits but taking 10 snakes in at the same time is a little costly. I will post pics of each snakes set up and condition later.
Thank You

Re: Contagious Scale rott?
If a snake gets sick, it's a good idea to put it in quarantine until it's recovered.
Same goes for any new animals. They should be put in quarantine for a few months before being introduced to the collection.

All of my snakes that are in the same room have been in the room for months. I quarantine all of my animals, that's why i am concerned because the 2 that were in quarantine, in a entirely different room got it in the same time frame as all the other snakes

What's your humidity level? What substrate do you use? Do you mist often?

Re: Contagious Scale rott?
that is weird....are you washing your hands in between handling the different snakes. Also if you are holding them and they are touching your clothes I might think that could do it as well.
But I would not think that scale rot would do that. I personally would contact a reptile vet and discuss. Could be something else

Re: Contagious Scale rott?
Possible bacterial infection that is causing scale rot as a symptom maybe. I've never dealt with scale rot so I'm not too sure.
Are you washing your hands? You say sanitize, but a little hand sanitizer will not kill enough bacteria to make it safe to handle your snakes. Use hot water and soap and scrub well between each snake.
If you haven't already, change to paper towel.
Double check temps and humidity, maybe they're getting burns.
Trying to cover all bases until you can see the vet.
Good luck!

There are a lot of different strains of the same bacteria. The bacteria is getting into the environment from the food or human contact. The snakes immune system needs to be able to recognize the bacteria to fight it. You need to make sure to clean the entire setup every time they defecate, even the water bowl. Just don't touch them and you won't have any problems. Minimize your touching to just when you need to clean there environment and your troubles will end. Do not put any human products on their skin. That is probably why the belly scales fell off so quickly. Your girl friend is carrying around a nasty bug.

The scabs under the mouth are probably from rubbing on something. I have had this happen to some of my snakes over the past couple years. I just swab it with some diluted chlorhexadine and it is gone with the next shed.
regarding the scale rot.. I have no idea. Do you have some good pictures of it?
