She got a burn!
I have a Brazilian, this morning I took her to the vet for an RI and when I took her out of her enclosure she had a pretty bad burn on her belly, it was very red, scales looked damages and were lifted up...of course I brought this up to the vet, she gave me some Silver Sulfadiazine to put on the burn. My UTH must have gotten a hot spot in it (and it must have happened pretty soon 'cause yesterday when I handled her she didn't have it), that's the only thing I could figure she could have gotten it from. Anyways, the vet cleaned out the scales (I use Eco Earth and some had gotten shoved under the damaged scales). Should I take out the Eco Earth until she's healed? Use newspaper, towels, or paper towels or something? I've been giving her warm baths to let her soak and then put the cream on the burn (the vet said twice daily). I'm just not sure about leaving the Eco Earth in. And is there anything else I should do? Like, flush the damaged scales out with water or a Q Tip?

Hi,
I don't know about the rest but yes I would take out the bedding and replace it with something easy to clean like papertowels.

Okee, thanks...what I was thinking but it's the first burn I've dealt with thought it'd be best to check with experienced people.

Re: She got a burn!
What brand is your UTH? I have two differnt brands (one in one tank, and another recently bought for my Boa)
I find my new Exo Terra much more sutable as it is a lower wattage and dosnt seem to be prone to hot spots. My other is a Zoo Med, and it gets hot spots and even though it claims to be around the same wattage it gets about 20-37º Hotter at the same setting. Substrait plays a big roll in it too. I changed to jungle mix (cocunut husk and moss mix) and not only dose it make it easy to keep up a good humidity but its easy to clean. If you use newspaper or papertowls you will need to turn down your UTH to about 20-30% power as they will be almost nothing between the snake and the heat source.
0.1 Normal Red Tail Boa - Suzie Q
1.0 Normal Western Hognose - Oink
1.0 Bearded Dragon - Gilbert
0.1 Veiled Chameleon - Lew
1.0 Normal Crested Gecko - Stubs
1.0 Corgi Dog - Josh
1.0 Pug Dog - Sammy
1.0 Guinea pig - Teadybear

Re: She got a burn!
Yeah, I've unplugged the UTH so I can check it out sometime, I may just need to replace it, honestly. It is old, I've had it for two years, it came with my Bearded Dragon's first cage. I got that cage from a teacher who had a son that kept herps while in high school (he's past college and everything), so I can only imagine how old it is exactly. I think it's a Zoo Med but don't hold me to it I'll have to check.
