    A few Mali Uromastyx Q's

Most likely the next reptile I'm going to get would be either a Yellowbelly Ball python or a Mali Uromastyx. I just had a few questions on the Mali..

I'm thinking of getting a subadult, so what are the prices I'll be looking at?
I read that they can have bird seed as substrate, and the Uromastyx at my volunteer job are on bird seed, so what type of bird seed should I use and where can I find it? (I would imagine petsmart)

Also, what type of vegetables can I offer daily? If I have anymore questions I'll be sure to post.

I use repti sand because it keeps the humidity real low which is needed, Also it is real absorbent when they go to the bathroom and tends not to smell as bad, The bird seed is good because it is safe to be ingested, But if you use repti sand the risk of impaction is fairly low, Now if you use cheap play sand it is much higher, Because play sand tends to be square almost cube like grains as where the repti sand is rounded. They are very very messy eaters and usually drag their food threw the sand and throw sand in it while digging. Also they don''t need water at all, Just mist their food with clean water. If you put a water bowl in their they will just get sand or seed whichever you use all in it and it will increase their humidity as well.

Re: A few Mali Uromastyx Q's

For bulbs I recommend using T-Rex Active UV Heat mercury vapor bulbs. Last I checked they put out the most UVA/UVB and last the longest.

For basking I put down a piece of slate, adjust height of the blub and use a infrared temp gun to get the desired temperature.

For food, if you have a yard I would suggest growing some Hollyhock. Uro's LOVE the flowers they produce. Mix some Hollyhock blooms in with the normal diet. My uro can't get enough of them...

I found Deer Fern Farms to have some very good info. http://www.deerfernfarms.com/Uromastyx_Care.htm

    My little uro:
"If I were stranded on a desert island and could only have one book, record and person...I'd probably die of exposure."
