Measuring cool down temps

How does everyone measure cool down temps?

Do you shoot the warm side of the tub with a temp gun?

Ambient temps?

I've read on several different sites where instructions are given to cool them down to ~76 at night and ~85 during the day, but where are there readings coming from?

There are different ways of doing it. I use a night drop on my thermostat to take the temps to 80-82pn my hot side. My cool side obviously get a bit cooler though, more like 75. Some people just turn the heat off at night and heat the room to about 78-80. I know people who keep all thier snakes at 90 year round and produce viable clutches every year. Find something that works for YOUR situation. If you choose not to cool, once you introduce the male your female should after a bit start cooling herself(she'll spend the majority of her time on the cool side).

My question was how do you measure the temps. Do you go based on what the t-stat says? Do you shoot the tub with a temp gun? How do you actually measure the temps to verify they are at the desired temp?

If you are placing your probe for the t-stat directly on the heat source (which I do), I would always zap the hot spot in the tub to make sure my temps are where I want them to be. Just because your stat says 90 doesnt mean that it is actually 90 inside the tub. Your stat may say 95 in order to achieve a 90 hot spot in the tub so adjust accordingly. I have to run my stat at 90 to achieve an 88 hot spot in the tub. So when I drop my stat at night to 80 I get a 78 degree hot spot. In short, always take a temp reading where the hot spot inside the tub is. Hope this helps.
