Question Not afraid? ;/ advice needed

so , my ball python has 2 cardboard boxex hidouts wich i made personaly for him and he fits coiled up tight in there. when he's on the cool side, he stays in his hide. and at first he used to do the same on the heat side. now most of the time when he uses the heat side he stays out of the heatside and just stays on the substrate lying relax there. now i hear people sayin on forum that if the snake has a hideout on his cool side and doesn't have one on his heat side they prefer to sacrife heating and stay on the coolside to be safe and secure but my snake has a hideout and he doesnt use the hideout on the heat side.

this isn't really a problem just curiousity why he acts like he's not afraid of us, also he usually roams the viv trying to find a way to get out with me and my gf in the room and he doesn't care even if we go look at him. i handle my snake alot , maybe we're not a treat for him anymore? any advice?

Re: Not afraid? ;/ advice needed

What is your temp on the warm side and how are you regulating the heat source? Also, are you using a UTH, heat bulb, or both?

My guess is if he is staying on top of the warm hide, then it is either too hot inside and it's cooler on top, or, if you are using only a heat lamp, then it is too cool inside and warmer on top. Or possibly he made a mess in the hide and doesn't want to go back in...

Re: Not afraid? ;/ advice needed

for temps: im waiting for my temp gun to arrive it was shipped yesterday.
im using UTH for temp, the thing is in the middle its hot, and on the sides its warm , my normal tempreture messures that in the middle its about 88 - 90(where its hot) but he's not staying in the middle but on the warmer side of the heatmat, the hide is moveable and he also throwed it on the side but still doent go in. im not 100% sure if this is a tempreture issue.

But tempreture issues aside, could there be some other reason ?

he went in the heated hideout in the few days but also spent some time out of it as usual (after feeding he was always hiding)
tempreture messured with my kitchen thermometre ranges from 90 - 98 on the heathed side. still dont figure out why he stays out of its hideout on the heathed side sometimes lying there relaxed, tough when he ate he always was in the hideout.

ummmm... first off ditch the cardboard hide.. thats like a haven for bacteria.. just get 2 identical plastic bowls from the dollerstore and cut an entrance out.. also, people always say that, 'my snake doesn't go in the other hide' ..but do you guys actually monitor them 24hrs a day? they dont necessarily need to be in both hides 50% of their lives.. you should just have it there incase they do want to cool off.. sometimes mine go 3 days hot 1 day cold.. it all depends so no need to stress... also, they are a nocturnal and if they sense people in the room they might come out to get your attention cause their hungry.. but that doesn't mean you should disrupt their feeding cycle just cause their hungry.. my dog will eat till it dies, lol.. hope this helps and message me if you have any other concerns..

well. 98* is too hot for your snake. In fact, it is dangerously hot. If you are not controlling the heat source with something then that is your first priority. If I remember correctly you live overseas so it might be harder to find a reptile thermostat. A light dimmer should be easy to find though.

If your snake is laying out and looking to escape then it is stressed out. I suggest getting some more permanent (plastic) hides as the cardboard ones will be useless when the snake uses the bathroom.

Haha mine is the exact opposite. Always in the cool side. He is FINALLY not stressing out always in his hide. I'm loving it. My temps are:

    Hot hide:
90-94, have have a ghetto rig going my thermo stat is coming in tom finally!!!

    Hot side:
78-82 (measures by dial temp reader so it's prob off lower by a a few degrees)

    Middle temp:
79-83, using a lamp for the ambients and it stays around 81 for the most part

    Cool side:
79-83, lamp is inbetween middle and cool side so temps are the same

    Cool hide:
77-80, no UTH the ambient temps and lamp keep it this temp constantly

Hides have the Accurite Probes in them under the Aspen on top of the glass
The temps are measured by the Accurite device itself (inside temps)

I have the cage insulated pretty damn good now so the lamps aren't even on past half power now a days so basking spots aren't past to much over the amibent temps shown above.
Do I have issues? 2 days ago he came out for a bit and chilled on top of his cool hide then yesterday night his tail was out. lol

Thought I would revive a thread about this instead of making another noob one.

Re: Not afraid? ;/ advice needed

he rarely goes on the cool side 90% of the time he's on the hot side. he only runs around the viv when feeding day is near. he uses both of his hides but i was curious brcause sometimes he just lied out on the bedding relaxed starring for hours instwad of hiding even with me and my gf around the room, and thats what made me curious lol since they are suppossed to be afraid and stressed with people running around them witch doesnt seem like to effect my ball.

thx for the help so far

btw as i said im not 100% sure on temps, im using a kitchen normal thermometre (the decorative ones ) so i dont know how much acurate they are, my tempgun has been shipped like 4days ago so should arrive soon. and yes we have thermostats here wich i will buy if i see that my temps are too hot. (well even if they arent but not so soon )
