Depends on the age of the boa you gonna get. You'll probably be able to keep a baby boa in a 10g tank for the first couple months. After that don't even think about it. My boa was 3ft when I got her, 2yrs later 6ft, 3yrs later 8ft. Those snakes get big very quickly and need the proper enclosure not a fish tank I'm not joking.

Glass tanks are no good for boas. You'd be better off starting a baby in a sterlite container.
As for size, the biggest thing is making the animal feel secure. If you put enough hides in and cluter it up, it really doesn't matter if the enclosure is big. However, this makes the cage harder to create a heat gradient, and harder to keep tabs on the snake, some small when the snake is small is more feasible.

    Re: red tail

Boas are not like ball pythons and do not stress out as easily. I keep baby boas in 2x1 cages or 28 or 32 quart tubs, then move them to CB70 or 3x2 cages, then to 4x2 cages. I only offer hides to baby boas. My sub-adult and adult boas do not get them, but I do cover part of the plexiglass, on the cages, to make it darker on the hot side.

    Hope this helps.
