    Breeding for a Yellowbelly Pied

So I decided to try and breed a yellowbelly pied. I am however having a difficult time figuring out the genetics.

I know it takes two pied genes to make a pied. That part was easy. However, I keep getting conflicting information on yellowbellies.

One place says you get all yellowbellies if you breed a YB to a normal. Other places say you get 50% YB and 50% normal.

My question is this: If I were to breed a YB female who is het pied to a visual pied male, would she produce any YB pieds or only het YB and het YB pieds?

Before I invest a fortune in animals that won't produce what I'm looking for, I am hoping someone with more experience can point me in the right direction.

    Thank you for your time.

Re: Breeding for a Yellowbelly Pied

    yellowbelly is a codominant gene:

yellow belly x normal gives you - 50% normals, 50% yellow bellies (each egg as 50% chance)

Ivory x normal will give you all yellow bellies though (maybe this was what you were seeing?)

yellow belly x pied - 50% normals, 50% yellow bellies ALL 100% het for pied

Take 1.1 yellow bellies het pied and breed them together this will give you the possibility of having any of the following:
    - 66% het pieds
    - yellow bellies 66% het pied
    - yellow belly pied
    - ivoy 66% het pied
    - ivory pied
    - pieds

Take a yellow belly het pied and breed it to a pied and produce:
    -100% het pieds
    -Yellow belly pieds
    -yellow bellies 100% het pied

I cant remember the break downs for the % of each possibility right now. Hope that helped though

If you breed a YB to a normal the clutch "should" be 1/2 YB 1/2 normals. There is no such thing as het YB,its either a YB or a normal.

Re: Breeding for a Yellowbelly Pied

Thank you for clearing that up for me.

And I am sure that one place I visited said you would get all YB from a YB X Normal cross, which did not sound right since I was pretty sure YB was co-dominant.

However, you gave me exactly the information I needed, and I am now confident I can succeed with my YB Pied project. It will take time, but I am a patient person.

    Thanks again,

    Gale
