Re: First tank setup
That actually looks too big for a hatchling.
I would go with a 15qt or smaller to start.
You will also need some sort of heating. A UTH with a reptile thermostat will be most suitable for this setup.

Re: First tank setup
I agree, I began with a 15qt...just an eyeball rule of thumb, the length+width of the enclosure should equal the length of the snake. Smaller is better, it makes them feel more secure.
1.Don't forget to drill (or solder) your airholes in the tub.
2. I used aspen at first but not im using newsprint....cheap and so easy to clean up....just take it out and replace it. With aspen it was had to see urine. The feces and urate are obvious, but you can definately tell with np if there's a big wet spot under the hide
3. Don't remember if you said, but be sure the uth is connected to a thermostat and you also have a probed thermometer/ hygrometer
Hope it helps...if you are adamant about keeping the tub you have you can always ball up newspaper or add plastic greenery to take up room inside and allow your new "family member" to feel secure
