Breeding Questions

According to my scale, My female is 1332 grams(2lb. 11oz. - converted) this is having eaten 5 days ago 2 F/T sm. rats. Is she big enough to breed? I want to pair her with my 16 month old 600 gram mojave or my possible het pied boy and then hold back any girls that show tail markers and breed back to dad. To that end I have 2 questions, is my mojave boy old enough/big enough to breed? And am I correct in assuming that If my poss. het pied boy is in fact a het pied, then statistically when bred to my normal female the babies would be 50% normal and 50% het pied? This is my first attempt at breeding, before jumping in with both feet and investing in some more of the higher end morphs.

The answer to question 1 is, he is old enough and it will not hurt him to try.
As to question #2 If the male is in fact het pied, each egg has a 50/50 chance of picking up the pied gene. That does not guarantee that half will be het pied it just means they each have a 50% chance.

I suggest you might breed the mojave to the girl as the morphs are visual. Sell the babies and buy a het pied female. Grow her up and try with her.

The first question you should ask yourself, is she ready to breed ?

Actually, I think you should wait another year. And you probably would want to get a nice male that should be ready next year if you can. Or use the mojave.

Your possible het pied, is not the best thing to breed cause unless you have a pied to breed him to, you won't know if he is really a het pied or not. And it will take years to prove that out. I think it's a big and long project that you don't know if it will be sucessful or not. At least with a 100% het, you could hope for a bit of success.

And the fact that het pied males are SUPER cheap this year. So if you want to get anything to hold babies back from this year then that would be the best bet.

I would give her another month, and feed her some bigger stuff--see if you can get that extra 200 grams on her first.
