    Antibiotic cream for scale rot(mild)?

My bp has a VERY mild case of scale rot, as in 4 or 5 scales on his entire body. I have heard that putting antibiotic stuff on it is a good idea. It is basically the same thing as Neosporin, it is just a off brand triple antibiotic. He will be due for a shed in 2-3 weeks. Should I be using this? The scale rot is from him getting stuck on some tape and pulling the shiny outer coating of alot of scales off, although only these 4-5 became infected so to speak. I am sure this problem will be gone after a shed.

First off, switch your substrate to paper towels or newspaper.

Yes you can use polysporin or neosporin, just make sure it has no added "pain relief". These are not antibiotics.

I would highly recommend that you just take the animal to the vet for some antibiotic injections.

POLYSPORIN is better in my opinion

A good antibiotic cream is Silvadene

This is available only from your vet

Kaorte- He is on newspaper and it does not have pain relief in it. Don't take this the wrong way, but being 14, I am not gonna spend 200-300 dollars for a vet on such a minor case of scale rot. If it were serious I would in a heartbeat, but I really do not think it's necessary.

It probably won't cost you 200-300 dollars though. I know how it is though. I am a poor college student .

No need for antibiotics unless your vet thinks so

If all is needed is the Silvadene.....bring your wallet

Its a whole whopping 10 bucks

Still, when you think about it, is there really any difference between what I have and what a vet would give me for such a minor case of scale rot? Plus my nearest vet is an hour away and my parents would prob not want to drive me and say I am being overprotective or something.

I was reading through some old husbandry threads and someone said that cardboard hides should not be used. Is there any truth to this, because I have 2 cardboard hides and a rock den?

cardboard is fine as long as you throw the hides out when soiled. Cardboard can harbor wetness and therefor bacteria and molds and other nasties, but clean dry cardboard is cool.

where is the scale rot located on his body?

Use the Neosporin if you have it.

If it gets worse, notify your vet.

Most times you can keep em clean and dry.

And the next shed, they're fine.

Cardboard hides, yeah I'd ditch em, get some plastic ones you can wash and disinfect.

O yeah I throw them out when soiled. The scale rot 1 thin line on a big scale on his belly, 2 or 3 tiny scales under his head, and imagine the big scales on his belly, well 1 of the tiny ones off to the side of those. He is due for a shed in 2-3 weeks.
