    This website says you can't.

    1. Once a group of one male and several females is formed and bred, you cannot introduce any new animals without it being immediately attacked and killed by the original members!
    2. Two males can and will likely fight to the death if left together in a group with a small number of females.
    3. Never remove the male from the group and try to reintroduce him, even only after a day of separation. The females will kill him upon reintroduction.

Well you could always consider adding the male to see... What's the worst that could happen? You either breed or you have 4 well fed high protein females to feed off. Alternatively you could keep one of the female's male offspring in with the females and hope he will breed with them.

Read that thread try it out. I have one of my male weaners staying behind with the parents just because the male currently is really big and I would love to feed him off once his son is old enough to take his place.

Glad normal rats don't act like that. I mix-and-match mine all the time.

I replaced a male with 3 females and its working out fine. First thing i did was split up all the females. Gave them a week of alone time with a few weanlings. While they were out i put the male alone in thier cage. Then after a week i reintroduced the females slowly and kept an eye on them. They are now breeding.
