First mite problem help
Everymorning when I get home from work I check all my PBs and there tubs. I get home and check and notice 1 of my new pastels soaking in his water dish. I saw quite a few mites. I freaked out. These are the steps I took.
1. Got warm water running and rinsed him off.
2. Dumped out the paper towels in the tub in the trash can outside.
3. Cleaned the tub, hide, and water dish with Chlorhexidine solution.
4. Put new paper towels in tub and sprayed with PAM.
5. While waiting for it to dry I checked the other PBs and no mites.
6. Sprayed the slot the tub went in with PAM.
Today is feeding day, after the tub dries and I put him back in should I go ahead and try to feed him? Do I need to go ahead and clean the other tubs in the rack, and use PAM. I would really appreciate any help, I'm still really worried. Is there anything else I need to do?
Thanks Daryl

Re: First mite problem help
Personally I would postpone the feeding and go ahead and treat the whole rack. Or at a very minimum, treat the substrate in the other tubs and spray some PAM on a paper towel and wipe it around the edge of the other tubs. Since mites migrate it won't be long before they find the other snakes....

Re: First mite problem help
I would for sure take the infected snakes (if it has spread) and place them in another location until you are 100% that they are free of mites... mites can cause come a whole lot more problems than just being annoying, to include spreading bacterial infections.
"Hot Shot" No-Pest strips work pretty good as a preventative, as well as to get rid of them, you can find them at Lowe's or Home Depot in the pesticides section, make sure that you do not place them inside the tubs, depending on the size of your collection you can cut the pest strip into sections and place it in random spots in the room that you are keeping your snakes in....

Re: First mite problem help
You can bring them in on your clothes if you went to a reptile show or pet store. They are also sometimes found on bedding.
Do you quarantine your snakes?

Re: First mite problem help
you should
1.take you snakes and put them in warm water.
2. while they are in water, spray down their tubs with p-a-m
3. spray reptirelief on the hides'leaves, ect...
4.use papertowls as bedding.
5. after the snakes are done with the warm water, spray them with reptirelief

Re: First mite problem help
I heard that if you take a butter tub and put water in it and put some holes in the lid you can use it to capture the mites. I'd put those in all of their tubs, after having treated the entire rack, and sprayed most of the floor in the room you're in with pam (especially if you have carpets).
Also once a month I clean my rack and tubs with a mite killer (I use reptile relief).
