    Peeking Out of Hide?

My female BP spends most of her time in her hide and seems healthy. Is a great eater. However, often I'll find her with just her head peeking out of the hide. I know that happy BP's like to remain in a ball completely hidden. I am not sure if she only sticks her head out when I am coming downstairs, and she hears me? Or if this is typical for her. Just curious if any of you also have "peekers"?

Sounds like a happy snake to me, she's waiting for a mouse to scurry by so that she can pounce on it. Its one of my favorite things that they do

Yup, perfectly normal ... as far as hearing, they don't have ears but can feel some sound vibrations through their jaw (if i'm not mistaken) but they don't respond to sound.

I love when they just sit there with their heads poking out!

    Re: Peeking Out of Hide?

Peeking is one of my little guys favorite things to do to. He usually goes into the hide head first and than once his whole body is in curls is head around front and rests it right at the entrance.

And from what I have read lps2 is correct, but, snakes do have an inner ear and the best way I've heard snake hearing described is: Although snakes are not equipped with outer ears like people, sound waves from the air hit their skin and are transferred from muscle to bone. When the sound reaches the ear bone beneath the skull (at the jaw), it sends vibrations to the inner ear, and the sound is processed by the brain.

    Re: Peeking Out of Hide?

Very typical behaviour often referred to as "lurking". For ambush predators like BP's it can indicate they are watching for food to wander by or they may just be checking out the area while keeping their body safely in their hide (if you startle them, they can draw back lightning fast into the depths of their hide).

Mine never comes out of the hide unless attacking. On his last feeding he didn't even leave his hide . The rat peeked in and he grabbed it and coiled it inside his hide!
