Mama, what isth this thuff?
I use paper towels as substrate for two reasons, so easy to clean and to prevent THIS

I think it stunned her at first and then she worked her mouth around for a while before she actually turned her attention back to the rat. It started out about the size of a dime, but was much smaller by the time I got finished picking at it (with the tweezer-tongs) whenever she would open her mouth. I suppose the small bits in her teeth went down with the rat...oh well

Re: Mama, what isth this thuff?
There's actually newspaper under the paper towel. I just like the white paper towel on top for aesthetic reasons. Who knew after a year it would turn out to be an accident waiting to happen?
I am assuming that since most snakes ingest a little aspen or other such substrate at times, a tiny piece of biodegradable paper towel can't be too bad. She just seemed uncomfortable trying to figure out what on earth was stuck to the roof of her mouth

I know...me too! I could have sworn her expression actually changed to surprise and then a little panicky. She was looking up at me and I could almost imagine she was begging me to help her...poor little girl

Re: Mama, what isth this thuff?
Delilah actually got a piece of Carefresh stuck in her mouth tonight, and had a similar reaction... but then she dropped the mouse, tried to spit out the Carefresh, and finally swallowed it. Whoops! Then she was so nervous about eating more, she "stood up" and shook the mouse before taking it down. I use paper towels for my other BPs, but Delilah didn't seem to like that - and she technically belongs to my roommate, who chooses to use Carefresh instead. Anyway, cool picture and I'm glad your snake is okay!

Re: Mama, what isth this thuff?
Actually I did have the same thing happen a week or two ago with newspaper, only the snake (a blood python) didn't seem to "get it" so I had to kind of gently remove it from his mouth. Wasn't very stuck in, though ... But, it seems it can happen with newspaper as well as paper towel
What was even weirder was that the week before, I was walking by his tub and, for absolutely no reason, he grabbed at one of the newspapers in his cage, held on and coiled as if it were a rat! After I figured out what the heck had gone on (I was worried one of the snakes was having a seizure or something), I had to open up the tub and remove the newspaper from his mouth. It wasn't even a feeding day, so the room didn't smell like rat or anything ... I still haven't figured that one out!
