    I'm shaken.

I work at a small company (well, hundreds of employees ... manufacturing) ... and I am in the IT dept. Up until today that was 4+boss = 5 in the dept.

One of the guys I saw everyday .. one that was there YEARS before I was, was pulled out of the room and fired. Now .. I know that due to previous offenses he had a target on his back, but it sucks .. and it's scary to see it be so random. I am the newbie .. and I am still there.

I ... guess I just need to talk about it. I don't really think I will miss the guy, but we are a small group to begin with and to have one person yanked out just throws me for a loop. To all those reading this that have been hit by the bad economy and lost jobs ... you have my condolences. This sucks.

I feel bad for him. This is what is driving me crazy, my job is safe .. I am still here ... so why am I shaken? It's like they printed out a list of employees and threw darts. I dunno ... as if I was not worried enough, now I have to be on my toes for the next time they pull out the darts.

    Re: I'm shaken.

It would bug me too knowing that he had been there for so much longer.

It's a scary thing to know that your company is even thinking about giving up jobs, but to actually do it puts your own job at risk.

Don't worry, things will be ok.

    Re: I'm shaken.

For the past 3 years I worked a summer job for the local dept. of public works and it just works that all returning summer-help fills first available slots [6ppl], and any emply slots are filled by new people. Well I called today about when I'd be starting only to find out I was no longer working there as was a couple others that hoped to return. It isn't based on the economy though, we're hired by the village board and its all politics, so we were basically replaced with kids related to or somehow connected to the politicians. Was depending on the job and turned down others as this was always what I did, then they screwed me.

Well I just got a email from the owner of my company yesterday saying they will be laying off 15% of the workforce pretty soon. So I am sure I am screwed.

    Re: I'm shaken.

You said yourself the guy already had a target on his back. That's probably why they picked him over you. I'm kind of in a similar situation at my workplace, except I'm not worried about it. Why? Because I know I do a good job, and I get my work done. They've laid off about half of the guys I work with, most of who were there longer than I have been -- some had been with the company for 30 years. I've been there for 4 years. I tend to do a better job than most of the guys, and I don't whine and complain about getting stuck with work that I don't particularly like. In return, I know my job is pretty safe right up until the point that they actually shut the entire shop down.

    Re: I'm shaken.

I fell asleep on the couch .. and I woke up, looked a at the clock and it said 8:30. I freaked out worried that I have slept all noght on the couch .. woke up late and have not contacted work about being late yet.

I need to calm down. That was scary, stupid .. but scary.
