i am a marine biological scientist. i work with inverts only!! no fish, no dolphins!!
when you get a giant squid, you hang on to it at all costs!! we are going to send off some tissue samples for DNA identification of the animals and other scientist that study these have been notified in case they want some data from it.
you cannot eat giant squid at all!! they have more ammonia in their tissues than sharks.

That is kinda cool!!! Why do they have so much ammonia in their tissues? ive never heard of this before? * neat info!!!* are the small ones of the species just as bad to eat? or are they captured for food sometimes as well? Whats the difference between them, and the food squid we eat? ( not size * so much*, but edible-ness, hopefully that makes sense!)

Re: i love my job!! cool pic inside!!
the giant squid are in their own family Architeuthidae. the squid that people eat are much smaller and are in different families. there are a bunch of different species that are sold for food so im not too sure how to pin that one down for you other than them being in different families.
the theory of the ammonia in their tissues is to provide boyancy for them.

I love watching those shows where they go out at night and swim with the squid. Those guys (and squid!) are nuts!
My fav is cuttlefish. Those flashy little boogers.
