    need help with with humidity

i just bought a zilla snake kit yesterday.......... and it is a nice set up . BUT
the humidity is right throught the roof i am running just a REPTI-THERM 10 - 20 gallon UTH. i havent had the lights that came with it on , except the night one for a few minutes so i can see what they were doing .
there are 2 identical hides in there . and i am using the mulch that came with the kit which is ZILLA DOUGLAS FUR BARK. my humidity gage is reading 85 to 90 % humidity .
any suggestions as to what i can do ????
by the way my snake is a hatchling high gold BP.

    thanx

That high humidity is exactly what your snake likes. You just don't want the substrate WET. Substrate can be moist, especially during shed cycles. I think your set up is a good one. If you haven't already done so: Make sure the UTH doesn't get too hot---use a thermostat or reostat.
The high humidity is a sign of warmer ambient air(warmer than the air in your home) which is also good. The warmer air holds more moisture.
If that is one of your snakes under your user name, its a looker.

85 - 90% Humidity is too high.... it should be closer to 50-60% and maybe as high as 70% during shed cycles.

Do you have a screen top?

This site has some good info:

Is that a dial analog gauge giving you that reading? If so, it is probably wrong, if it was a digital, I would be concerned. Glad to hear you have better stuff on the way though.

What thermostat and digital did you order BTW?

That humidity is too high and might cause scale rot it should be at least at 60% if u have aluminum foil on your screen top take it off....and try leaving your room open (doors And windows so the humidity will lower down) if you have a heat lamp turn it on the humidity will decrease hope this help....

Re: need help with with humidity

    Okay...

    1) If you are housing these two snakes together please separate them ASAP. Ball pythons are not social animals and will become stressed if they are kept in the same enclosure

    2) Yes, 85-90% humidity is WAY too high!! The highest it should ever go is 70% and that's only when they are shedding. However, as BeastMaster already said, if you're using one of the dial stick-on hygrometers (like the cheap Flukers one) then it could be a little off because they are inaccurate. Even with such a discrepancy, though, it is probably still too high. About the only thing I can think of is to make sure the screen top isn't covered and start using the lights that came with your kit. Heat lights will suck humidity out like crazy! (Just make sure they don't raise your temps too much)

That should help, but if it doesn't, you could always switch to a different substrate like aspen. But definitely DO NOT leave it at that high humidity for too long and definitely separate those snakes if they are currently being housed together. Good luck and hopefully you'll get a better idea of what's going on when you get your new and improved supplies
