some snakes can adapt well to environmental changes (garters, king/milksnakes, racers, copperheads) but others can only deal w/ very little to no change (timber rattlesnakes).
my cousin lives in hopkinton and has found eastern milks, racers & garters on his property.
For a good read about mass. and snakes, check out landscape w/ a reptile.

Thats pretty cool! Never know when you'll run into them!
I live in downtown Springfield and there was one in the pool next door. I got him out before the maintenance guys killed it. It was sorta funny watching three grown men freaking out over a snake that was little over a foot long 
Oh, I let him go in the woods near "The Big Pond"
