Re: thermostat
Well since everyone else has given you the lecture and it looks like you are in a catch 22, this is the best deal I have found so far...hope this helps...

I have purchased reptile stuff from them in the past and would recommend them to anyone. The service was great and my stuff was delivered when they said it would be at a fair price. Good luck

Re: thermostat
Not to ambush this thread, but I didn't want to start a new one just yet.
I am using a prewired Ranco thermostat. For about a month now I've been using it with great success, temperatures only varied about 3*F.
However, I checked just now and one probes are telling me this.
Top: 91*F
Middle1: 88*F
Middle2: 93*F
Bottom: 98*F
What would cause those fluctuations from the thermostat? No storms or anything!

Re: thermostat
There is absolutely nothing wrong with the zoomed 500r. It can be had usually for around $30. It is a little tricky to get set, but once it is set it is good to go. If you are only going to have one snake in a setup, it will do fine for many years to come.
To answer your question though, you can't get a thermostat for $15. You can however get a lamp dimmer for $10 from your local hardware store. When used properly, in a room with steady temperatures, it will get you by just fine until you can afford a tinker free upgrade.

That's a great way to put it.

I would direct everyone's attention to post #13.
Answered the OPs question without making him feel like an idiot.
I fondly remember snake keeping 20 to 30 years ago - when we had no idea what a Helix or a Herpstat was, but still managed to keep our animals healthy and happy with the humble rheostat and the *gasp* taboo glass aquarium.
Owning reptiles does indeed cost alot of money when you convince yourself you need to buy a drawer full of $1,000.00 snakes, a $600 rack and a $150 thermostat. With a little diligence you can have the same amount of fun with some $50.00 snakes, a $10 dimmer and a couple of glass aquariums bought used off of Craig's List.
Remember, spend in moderation, get the basics down and when you can finally afford to keep all of the fancy snakes you want and not live paycheck to paycheck, go ahead and go Cadillac all the way.
To the OP - good on ya for getting your ducks in order before you get your snake.
