I guess that's what I was thinking of. It's quite funny, I don't know how having a fishing license makes you more qualified, lol.

It's just a way for them to get more funding for fish and wildlife. I think they are assuming most people are collecting with the intent to kill and harvest the flesh/skin, in which case a fishing license makes sense. Many states use sport fishing licences as noncommercial reptile/amphib/crab harvesting licences as well.

South carolina does not require a permit to own venomous snakes.

in indiana you have to have one to collect game turtles and frogs

here in sc we dont need a permit but some people dont need to keep hots so a permit wouldnt be a bad thing!

are there any states in the US that do not require you to have a permit to own HOTs? I mean HOTs like rattlers and cobras. In FL just about everything is a HOT! ive only found 2 not on this list (thought it was one but asked last night) western, and vine snake.

Be careful when reading laws though becuase some can be worded wrong and be very confusing to understand. For instance we found a website that worded large cats were illegal in south carolina and after speaking to our fish and game, department of natural resources and the usda we found they are legal to keep in our state. We are allowed private keeping of all the exotic smaller cats (bobcats, lynx, servals, caracals) without a permit unless we are wanting to breed them or show them for education. And we are allowed all large cats (tigers, lions, cougars) for private ownership with a usda permit. But a site I found told me it was illegal to own any wild cat in sc. BUt it was worded wrong. What it meant was it is unlawful for me to go into the forest in sc and catch a bobcat or any wildanimal and bring it home as a pet
