I'm also picking up a CoolPix for the wife to have a point and shoot. I've been impressed with Nikon since college but never had the coin to buy one...I think I'll take the leap..

Do you find the Aperture priority and Shutter priority modes to be flexible??

I shoot a lot on manual and on aperture priority mode, I seem to think it works very well for what i use it for.

The Nikon D60 is a "sucker" camera sold mostly to people who are not professional photographers, but who are impressed by meaningless megapixels. Megapixels have nothing to do with picture quality. The less expensive D40 is the same thing as the D60, but better. The D40 is the professional's vacation camera. It's what I take when I'm on vacation or with family, too.

The D60 exists to allow Nikon to sell a camera in the $750 price range to less experienced people who feel better spending $750 on a camera than spending $470 on the superior D40. If you're smart enough to be researching cameras from people like me who are here to help you instead of trying to sell you an expensive camera, just get the D40.

    I HATE SD cards....with a passion

I have had so many problems with SD cards in my life, THAT alone will make me never get a Nikon.
Had a D70 and have a D200 ...They both use CF Compact Flash cards and not SD cards.

Im sure the same side of the story could be told with a CF cards as I did it with SD.

Givn SD cards are cheaper, so if you do break one, its not THAT big of a deal.
Actually, the D70, D70s, and all their higher end cameras utilize CF cards.

Their low end, and lower end professional cameras use SD. The reason for this is that SD is the more basic type of storage device. Many point and shoot cameras use SD, Nikon, manufacturing higher end professional DLSRs allows people to use the storage media that they already have.

I have a NikonD80, it uses SD cards and that is the only thing i'd change about it when i first bought it. Now, it doesn't really matter. I've used both (SD and CF, as well as tethered and other types of shooting). If you buy a reliable SD card you should be fine. That said, i've had WAY more CF cards bite the dust on me with important image files on them than breaking SD cards. I suppose it depends on the card type, who made it, how you use it, etc.

All of these were shot with a D80, my understanding is that the D80 is a higher end camera than the D60, but it is an older camera. Some of these images are older than others.

PS: megapixels translates to how large of an image you can PRINT. You can make stunning 9x12s and 11x14s with a 10 MP camera (like the D80). I usually compile multiple images if im making BIG prints. The average non professional photographer doesn't make really big prints (24x36 and larger).

The largest print i've made to date is a 30x40 inch print, but that was a project compiled by multiple images.
