Are any breeders still pairing their males and females currently?? How late do you keep the pairings up?

Kinda newbie question with breeding but I appreciate the input!

I still have a couple pairs that look like they will go soon that I am continuing to pair. I "read" the females.

There are:
1. Those that have already laid, so obviously they are pounding rats in preparation for next year.
2. Those that will lay soon (past ovulation and possibly even their pre-lay shed). These tend to have the "ridge back". Since they are "done", they won't be paired any more.
3. Those that will ovulate soon (huge follicles and still displaying developing behavior like bowl wraps and favoring the cool side). These will still be paired until ovulation or until mid-summer.
4. Those that most likely won't lay this year. These will no longer be paired for this season.

It really varies from one person to another, personally mid to end of may is my deadline, if it took it took if it didn’t it didn’t.

If it didn't take it means so many more months for the females that didn't take to gain extra weight before the following season which is not bad either.

if we are breeding in a controlled environment why do we have to follow specific months of the year to breed. Why cant we just cool them when we want to and have them breed then? Is it possible to breed any time of the year?

You don't some people do breed year round.

Just like not everybody cools their snakes.

If you chose to cool your snakes however you will realize that is it easier to do so during the cool months of the year opposite trying to do it during the warmest month of the year. Same thing applies to photoperiod.

Bottom line there are many ways to do it you just need to find what’s right for YOU.

Also realize that is a lot of work and that not everyone wants to do that year round.
