    Snakes in the car!!

So, I did a bit of searching here to see what's the best way to travel with bp's. Unfortunately, for most people the trip is a couple hours at most. I live in MA and go to school in MD, about a 9 hour drive. I won't be making to trip again until this August, but I want to plan for some way to do it.

I was thinking some kind of box or tub with a heating element hooked up to it. In the past, I've had trouble keeping temps stable, especially in the winter. So, would a small UTH work, or should I get some Flexwatt? I've used UTHs before, but never Flexwatt so I don't know how to use it. I was going to hook whatever I choose up to a power converter to run in the car.

Any ideas? Like what needs to be in the box/tub?

Bag the snakes individually and use a Styrofoam shipping box. Add heat or cold packs if necessary.

I agree with Styrofoam and heat packs. If you really want to make sure all is well, run a temp prob in, cause those heat packs can get pretty hot.

Also, make sure the heat packs are not capable of letting fumes into the container the snakes are in. I have heard that they let off some type of gas, but I can't recall what it is.

    Re: Snakes in the car!!

In august? Why would you need heat packs. I'm transporting snakes from Boston to Philadelphia today and I'm bagging them and putting them in the car with the gf while I drive the truck with all our stuff. I see no need to get fancy unless you're shipping them. Chances are your car isn't gonna have temperature extremes anyway and they'll do just fine.

unless you're dealing with extreme temps, cool/heat packs are not needed.

Don't cook/freeze your snakes by putting them directly in front of your AC/heat vents and keep the car at a comfortable temp and they'll be just fine.

I also travel to and from in the fall and winter, so the heat packs will come in handy then. About what temp do I want the box to be?

    Re: Snakes in the car!!

I wouldn't let it get too much over 90 degrees. Do some trial runs. Honestly if you keep your car at 75 degrees, 70 if you have to, they will be just fine (if you are sure the box is staying that temp as well). They are more hardy than people give them credit. You said 9 hours right? 1/2 day in 75 degrees is NOT going to kill them or give them a RI.
