    Re: thermostat

No good thermostat will be that cheap..
You want a good reliable thermostat, and it will probably be the most expensive thing you purchase for your snake, but is a requirement for the care of your animal.

    Expect $60+.

    Heres a good site.

    Re: thermostat

No offense intended to the op, but this question reminds me of an ad campaign Bell helmets ran years ago that said if you have a $10 head buy a $10 helmet.

Go ahead and spend the money to get a good reliable t-stat. If you're looking to save money, I would go with an on/off over a proportional. Johnson is a very good unit.
Reptile Basics is a great place to pick one up.
    Good luck.

    Re: thermostat

Owning reptiles costs ALOT of money... if you cant spend the money for a reliable t-stat, what are you going to do if you reptile needs to go to the vet... how would you pay for that??? just something to think about!!!

    Re: thermostat

Ok but your not going to find one for $15 even if it is used!!! they are going to be at least $40... the cheapest one that i suggest is the Zoomed 500R, but that is not as reliable as a Herpstat or a Helix. but it is a good temperary one!!!! What kind of reptile do you have... a ball python

    Re: thermostat

Ok, make sure that if your parents really are going to 'foot the bill' for the keeping of this snake that they know just how pricey it really is. You can't just stick a BP in a glass tank with some half-logs and a big water dish and call it there. They take quite a bit of initial setup money for a good enclosure, heating, heat control, hides and decor, plus the cost of rodents for feeding and an amount set aside for vet needs.

The cheapest thermostat is the ZooMed Reptitemp 500R, which is a great starter t-stat but NOT a good permanent one. For a good stat, you need to spend at least $80 or so on a Johnson or Ranco. The thermostat is the most important, and therefore most expensive, piece of equipment you will need to properly keep any snake.

I'm not saying you haven't thought this through...or that you're acting on impulse. But please make sure you've looked into and researched all aspects of snake keeping before even thinking of getting one.
