Humid Hides work!!

I moved my ball from a 20L to a 40B. I got the temps right with humidity at 55%. My ball was ready to shed so I put a humid hide in for the first time. Dart has never had a complete shed, I have always had to help. Not anymore!! Humid hides really work!! I just used an old shoe box and filled it with damp spagam (sp?) moss. I'm keeping the moss and just threw the box away. I want to get a plastic shoe box next time I'm at the store.

When you get a plastic box, what do you do, just put a few holes in it and spray the moss once a day?

Congrats, I usually just add a couple pieces of moist natural sea sponge to my regular hides and enclosure during their shed.

If you have 2 hides, would you recommend putting it in both hides or just one?

I've been using one for about 4 months as well. After having occasional bad sheds, I decided to give it a try with a Rubbermaid tub and sphagnum. I haven't had a poor shed since. It still fascinates me how they're instinctually aware that they need more humidity with an impending shed. They disappear into the tub for 2 or 3 days and come out looking pretty. I'm constantly amazed at how aware herps are of their own needs.

I just cut a hole into the upper portion of one of the narrow sides, and punched one hole in the top of the lid. I just fill up the lid when I'm refilling their water, and it drips into the hide and the sphagnum sucks it up.

Another unexpected upside is that they've decided that the humid hide is the best place to relieve themselves. This makes it nice because when they do, I just dump it in the toilet, wash it out, put new sphagnum in and put it back. I've hardly had to spot clean the substrate at all, and now I'll be able to use some not-so-easy-to-clean, but more aesthetically pleasing substrates.

I actually add it as an extra hide so they can still thermoregulate without being forced to have high humidity as well.

I'd rather they had an extra hide they only use when shedding than possibly discourage them from using the hides they need to feel secure when thermoregulating.

I use a clean plastic coffee container like what foldgers comes in. All my snakes seem to love them.

I cut a hole a little bigger than the widest point of the snake in the top and keep damp moss in there. I use the small cans for my little BP's and the larger ones for the big ones.

My biggest one is about 1500 grams. She still has room to grow. I think one up to around 3000 grams could fit in the large "cans" but that's just a guess.
