thinking of getting a Western Hognose

So i've been wanting to be a snake owner ever since i was a little kid catching copper bellies and garter snakes in the back yard. Unfortunately my wife is afraid of them and had been saying no. well i finally convinced her to let me get one. originally i was planning on getting a Ball, since i've wanted one since i was in junior high when i was first researching them.

Well, since joining the forums, i've seen pictures of the hognoses and i am very intrigued. i like the look of them and such.

But, how good are hognoses for a first time snake owner? it seems that their humidity and heat levels would be easier to maintain based on where i'm currently living. I'm currently living in montana and i'm having a very difficult time finding out if i can even legally have a western hognose in this state.

    Oh, definitely get....

    BOTH!!!

I was the snakophobic and my husband, after 11 years, finally got my blessing to get a snake. He came home with a ball python last October then we got another bp for my sons 2 weeks later and then last night they got a western hognose from Santa.

    0.1.0 pastel bp
    1.0.0 spider bp
    0.1.0 albino bp
    1.0.0 bumblebee bp
    1.0.0 yellowbelly bp
    0.0.1 normal bp
    1.0.0 normal western hognose

Life should NOT be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in an attractive and well preserved body, but rather to skid in sideways, chocolate in one hand, body thoroughly used up, totally worn out and screaming "WOO HOO what a ride!"

from what I know about montana, it has pretty relaxed laws(as opposed to northeastern states).

I'm 90% sure it is legal to own western hognose snakes, but a quick call to your local government wildlife agency should be all you need to do.

I'd have to agree with anatess to get both You should have no problem convincing your wife that snakes are adorable(I hope!).

They do make great beginner snakes (after all, my first true snake was a Western Hognose). You should go for it. Note that they should have some heating (just a heat lamp and UTH) on one side of the cage.

    My snakes:
0.1 Kenyan Sand Boa ~Nephthys~ (aka "Linky")

    In a better place:
    1.0 Pastel Western Hognose ~Charon~ 10/3/07-4/24/09

If you need/want to know anything about Hognose snakes, just ask me.
