Try using a bit of compassion.
Horrible thing to happen.

Re: Terrible story...
If I had a snake that size- whether it's 10ft or 13ft, there's no way I would have been pissing it off with nobody home. I'm sure the injection could have waited until her husband got home.
Not saying that she deserved to die but, responsible pet ownership would have prevented the whole situation.

Perhaps implying that she was not a responsible pet owner is a little more than is necessary right now? How many of us have cut corners not expecting that the worst, most unlikely thing in the world was just around the corner? Slipping up - becoming complacent once too many times - does not make someone irresponsible. Just because her story made national news doesn't mean she should be judged.
Exchanging your life for a mistake in pet care - that's a tall order.
There is no need to play the blame game. We should be offering support to her family and doing whatever damage control to minimize the restrictions put upon us by ignorant law makers who will cite this tragedy as justification.
Our community is one person smaller tonight. I pity us all.

When dealing with 10+ foot pythons (10+ foot snakes in general) , there is no cutting corners. No slipping up.
I agree with Melanie. If she waited until the proper # of people were present to administer the shot, this would have been prevented. It is stories like these, and because of irresponsible owners, that may lead to ALL of our pythons and boa being taken away.

Re: Terrible story...
I wasn't judging or blaming. I did not say she deserved it. I said it was preventable. And you cannot tell me it wasn't. I don't have any 'giants.' But I've known for years- 10+ feet means, always always ALWAYS have somebody there for back up. For this exact reason. Like Charlie said, this is part of the reason our hobby is being threatened.

I agree, but I have a hard time believing that anyone here has never done it anyway -- something they KNOW isn't the right way to go about things, but - well - "it's just real quick" and "my snake is always so docile". This could have just been that ONE time..
Anyway you know what i think about it.

Re: Terrible story...
Sad for the family, sad for the community, and fuel for legislators. This sucks all the way arround. I had two retics about 25 years ago. I quickly learned after a few years that without a fellow snake lover to assist me, it was time to donate to my local herp society, for my welfare and the snakes. Love snakes, but no more giant ones for me.
