Switching over to rats - first try today...

    And he NAILED it!

He eats f/t, I thawed a weanling rat out with a mouse and then scented the rat with some used mouse bedding and he didn't even hesitate!

Struck and downed the rat without hesitation!

    WOOHOO Stan!!!!

Very cool! I switch over to rat pups as soon as I can. You just can't beat a rat as far as nutrients go.

Where did you come up with that information?

TooManyToys, I've read this in several books and have also been told this by a few herpetologists at the Pittsburgh Zoo. Rats have a thicker bone structure than mice and that is where alot of the nutrients come from.

TooManyToys, I just did a Google search on the subject and found a few links:

    http://www.thepythonbreeders.com/pages/ContactUs.htm

    http://www.repticzone.com/caresheets/907.html

    http://www.herpcenter.com/feeders/33...s-vs-mice.html

I'm sure if you took more time, you would probably find more information. Remember, when it comes down to it, these are all just opinions.

There is a small breeder that goes by VPI that might disagree with you.

I mainly feed rats, but I think they both have advantages.

Re: Switching over to rats - first try today...

Just curious, if a snake is capable of taking a rat (prekilled) what would be the disadvantage? Is there anything special about a mouse that I may be missing? I'm not trying to be a jerk about this, I'm just trying to gain more knowledge
