Cement tubs in a rack

Right now only one 10g tank and one small old plastic mouse cage.
I want to get more tanks and maybe put them in my basement on a large shelf or something.

Plastic tubs at the moment. I'm in the process of finishing two racks as we speak. One of the racks I'm using 1/4 inch mesh for the ASF'ers, anyone have any experience with using this size mesh for them?

I like the convienence of feeding and watering them from outside the rack...makes it go much quicker...

Agreed, and I have yet to even get a nibble on any of my cement mixing tubs. I highly doubt I ever will. I never had that problem with any of my other rodents.

I don't see having to fill tons and tons of water bottles. Can't stand it. Fill up a 5 gallon bucket once a week with a water hose and be done with it. No lids to fool with makes it a more efficient use of space too.

I keep mine in sterilite tubs. They are easy and light weight and I only have one snake to feed so I breed on a small scale. They are deep enough for wheels.

I breed them for my snake but I also find them to be interesting to watch. I have even pet themfrom time to time....very slowly.....

I don't have any, but will be picking some up this month. I'm planning on keeping them in my current rack, which has cement tubs. It's the rat rack design on Tim and Monica Bailey's site. I wonder if I need a smaller mesh for these, though.

tried various tubs varying degrees of thickness . Unfortunately I must have got '' The Demon Chewers from Hell '' .this , even more unfortunately for myself and my enduring wife , turned out to be a genetic trait , passed on to ALL the young.

Even reinforcing the vent holes with STEEL washers was to no avail .

I eventually ( why I did not sooner I will never know , ok ahm a guy , a stubburn dude ) switched them all over to glass tanks .

There is nothing more satisfying to someone who spent an entire weekend catching escapes , than watching the little varmits ( sp?) SLIDING down a glass wall with a look of utter disbelief on its face . Life is good , now !

If the rack uses 1/2 inch hardware cloth than it will not work.

You need to use 1/3 or 1/4 inch hardware cloth or the hoppers will squeeze through and escape, and trust me you do not want to start running for an ASF escapee!

Ah, thanks for that advice, Deborah! My rack does have 1/2 inch hardware cloth, so I will make some changes before the Austin show.

Too funny! I'm with you. All my ASF's are behind glass because I'm just not a brave woman and can't deal with a lost ASF in this big old house of ours. We had one get loose the other night while feeding and it was enough of a hassle just recapturing the little dude. Btw, Frankykeno's Patent Pending Handy Dandy ASF Catcher came to the rescue again! *

*just an old plastic margarine tub with a lid, whomp down the tub over said little racing boogerhead, slide the lid very carefully along the floor, under the tub and in one practised motion flip over the tub whilst snapping on the lid....bingo...one caught albeit crabby as heck ASF ready for safe transport! *
