Talking Wow... What an ego boost at the Job!

Well... as some of y'all know, and as I'm sure I'll get some sneers/etc from those that don't (and hey, maybe a few more from those who already do), but back in December I started working at Petco as a means to help pay the bills, get discounted rodents, and talk about the animals I love the most with people of varying levels of experience. I know, I know... Petco is the root of all evil in the minds eye of the herp world, but as far as this thread is concerned that's neither here nor there. I personally see the benefits Petco has to offer as far as educating people about herps (as long as the person doing the teaching knows what the heck they are talking about).

The real point of this thread is this... I have worked there for what would be about four months now... and it has been brought to my attention that they want me to become a Team Lead once my 6 month comes around (and pass all my specialist tests). According to them, I have an exceptional attention to detail with the animals, excellent work habits, and all that jazz... Kinda ticked off a fair number of my co-workers at the same time that the new kid seems to have been chosen over them. In reality I do not know how feasible it would be given school loads and still maintaining my duties up at Petco, but I gotta admit it sounds quite enticing if for nothing else that the experience. But at the very least a mega-awesomely kind gesture. Given the nature of life recently, it's was great being given that news.

I don't know about the team lead requirements at Petco, but when I worked at Petsmart, the team leads didn't work hardly any longer or more often than the rest of us. So if it's the same, you shouldn't have a problem balancing school work and work work.

Congratulations on the offer. I worked my butt off at Petsmart and was always getting compliments from the customers. I had so much knowledge to offer but it went unnoticed because my manager refused to listen to me over Petsmart's care guides. I was so angry and frustrated that I eventually quit. I'm glad to see someone else is being recognized.

Congratulations congratulations congratulations!!! If you say it to someone three times, something good is supposed to happen for them. I saw it in a movie once...

Congratulations! If you can wing, I'd say go for - it's awesome to get some management experience on your resume (speaking as someone who interviews a LOT of people). =D

not even close to a regular associate... i would become responsible for receiving animals/shipments, making bank runs with thousands of dollars, taking animals to the vet, incident reports, register troubleshoot if a problem arose, etc... pretty much would be a second in command manager. Heck... even wear a manger uniform (hooray button-down shirt! lol) Unless you asked or knew the store, 95% of people would believe me to be a manager...

I really want to do it... the only problem I can see is that I'd have to put in a minimum of 35 hours a week while still taking classes. But there are also so many pluses from having that experience, I still have two months to make a decision, but hey... as it stands it seems as though my life is about to get far busier!

And thanks for all the responses, I am really quite stoked about it!!!

Re: Wow... What an ego boost at the Job!

Wow Ben, that's a major compliment to you on the job. Think about it long and hard, it may mean a crazy schedule for you but that sort of management experience is a huge plus on your resume at your age.

Don't apologize for working at PetCo. First off, it's good, honest work and there's never a reason to apologize for getting out there and earning a living while also going to school. Secondly, here in Toledo, PetCo is the best pet store around. The disgusting mess seen in our local privately owned pet stores is beyond belief (one was closed down...YAY!). PetCo may not do it right in all their stores, but here in Toledo they are doing a very nice job.
