I made a horrible mistake... (lots of pics)

I broke the number one rule with feeders: DONT GET ATTACHED!

I bought a rat pup for my ball, and she refused it. So I took it out of the tank and made the mistake of playing with it. Now she's a pet, and I went back and bought ANOTHER feeder specifically to keep as a pet. *sigh* I'm a sucker for animals - any and all kinds.

Here she is when I first decided to keep her:

    And with her friend:

    "LOL Rats"

    And here they are today:

I had her on the counter, making her dinner, and looked away for two seconds. I was left with the in-home version of Whack-A-Mole.

Don't worry, stove was not on.

    Too cute

I have to not look at them as being cute when I feed...

But when they are allowed to live, they stay with me until the end.

Nice. -lol- Unfortunately, no, she didn't.

They're surprisingly great pets. The black one is scared of everyone but me, and even then I'm only tolerable in her eyes. The white one, however, is like a dog. She comes when called, comes running out of her hide when she hears the door, and knows the command "Come up" which is when I need her to jump on my hand. I have always heard that they are smart, but I guess I just didn't really comprehend. Now I do.

funny thing is, my ball python is afraid of them now that they've gotten so big. I had her around my neck last night and was sitting in the living room. The scent of them doesn't bother her, but when one fell onto the floor nearby and started running around, she started hissing up a storm! That's big, bad ball pythons for ya...

Awww they are cute! I've always contended that rats make the very best of the rodent family as far as pets go. Almost a cross between the cleanliness of a cat and the friendliness of a dog packaged in a small enough animal that's easily manageable but not easily squished (like hamsters and such are when small kids handle them). Well fed and socialized rats rarely bite, another point in their favor as a companion animal.

If yours get big enough you can buy small ferret harnesss for them so they can't wander too far off and get in trouble.

The only thing to watch with pet rats is their weight. Yours look in nice shape but just watch them for getting too chubby. I learned the hard way back in our purely pet rat days that they simply will overeat and that excessive weight cuts their livespan way back.

Aww I ended up doing the same thing. I bought a Mouse in attempt to fed but once my BP didn't take him I was like "It's too cute" and ended up keeping it as a pet. but I was in florida for a week and it got out and hid under the fridge until I got back. luckily it was still alive. unfortunately it met it's demise last night. It squeezed out of its cage again and my cat got ahold of it this time and well lets just say it wasn't a pretty sight
