    very sad couple of days

I had two pet mice that I had kept for almost a year, and all of a sudden they got sick. One died yesterday and the other just died in my hands. They were kept in a cage next to my rats cage, and I am wondering if what they had can be passed to the rat. They had strange symptoms, it was really out of the blue. They had arched backs, goopy eyes, ruffled fur and they were breathing heavy. They both died on the same day I noticed these symptoms. I have no idea what they had, I just dont want my rats to get it.

I am really upset because they were my first pets in college, and they were never meant to be feeders.

Some things are able to cross species... I don't really know of any off hand. Best you can do is to look for the really subtle minor things to suggest illness.

A year is a pretty long life for a mouse. They only live for around two years normally, and most die long before that.

It sounds like you treated them well, and I think you should be happy you were able to give them a good year.
