Another version of it, breeding a pair, then breeding the same male back to all of his own offspring, over and over again, untill you get spider head wobbles.

So, you are implying that inbreeding or even line breeding to prove out a trait is backyard breeding? Or even that Kevin from NERD is a backyard breeder since he is the one that proved out the spider gene?

    Just curious....

If that were the case we would see many recessive traits with wobbles(which we dont) because they are bred to related snakes over and over again.

Spiders are Dominant which gives them the least likely reason to inbreed, not to mention they are one of the most widely used morphs for combinations. That should eliminate wobbles if anything. I think you are barking up the wrong tree based on your assupmtons not facts.

The original spider imports came with the wobble - it's not an inbreeding thing - unless you want to classify mother nature a BYB.

    Re: "Backyard Breeding"

One use of the term backyard breeder is to describe someone who breeds dogs without regard to the genetics of the dogs involved. A real breeder is supposed to always be striving to better the breed. Someone who just regularly cranks dogs out for profit is better described as a puppy mill. In all fairness a big time dog breeder will describe someone who occasionally breeds a litter of puppies as a hobby using top quality breeding stock but selling at 1/3 the price of the breeder as a backyard breeder.

In my unfettered opinion in the herp world you have:

Businesses - those that make it their primary source of income.
Hobbiest - those that breed to expand their knowledge, interest and collection, if you're lucky you cover the feed bill.
Mills - pumping them out for the $$$$
    Scammers - pretty self explanatory

If you are breeding in the herp world you fall under one of these four categories.

Flippers aren't breeders - but if you had to classify them I'd put them under mills.

People who are breeding for the love of the animals and give them the proper care are not, in my estimation, backyard breeders. They are just beginners who haven't made a name for themselves yet. I'll be joining those ranks in a year or two.
You said it; I agree. IMO, backyard breeders can be compared to puppy mills.
