    Re: Thermostat which to chose

They are both fine thermostats. The thing to decide is whether you want an analog (on/off) thermostat or a proportional one.

The Johnson controls is an analog thermostat. This means that it will monitor the temp and turn the power on and off to maintain your set temperature. This can cause a fluctuation of 2-3 degrees at times however they work just fine.

The Helix DBS-1000 is a proportional thermostat. It differs from the analog in that the power is never turned "off". Instead, the amount of power going to the heating unit is regulated. In this way the temperature can be controlled more precisely. This type of thermostat is better if you're using lightbulbs or CHEs as the continuous on/off cycle of analog thermostats can cause them to wear out sooner.

You can't go wrong with either one. If you can afford the extra few dollars, my preference is to go with the Helix.

I use the Herpstat proportional thermostats and love em. I also have heard the same from many others that have used both the Helix and the Herpstat, and they said the same thing, the herpstat rocks!
