State and Local Legislation Thread

There's almost always something bubbling up somewhere. New laws or regulations regarding herpetoculture are being passed at many different levels...city, county or state. Maybe even nationally, at times.

It's our responsibility, as reptile keepers and enthusiasts, to be aware of these actions as they come up, and take the steps necessary to make our voices heard...to educate our lawmakers and let them know the full ramifications of what they are considering.

This thread has been stickied for the purpose of informing others of such actions that may be pending. If you are aware of something you'd like to inform others about...please respond to this thread and include whatever links and information is pertinent...including contact info for specific lawmakers if applicable.

For discussions about specific pending legislation, please start a new thread so that critical information in this thread does not get buried.

A suggestion, when posting a reply about a new law, or one you know of, there should be a general format for ease of searching.

Just some ideas...
MI, Detroit: No alligators allowed in sewers effective July 1st, 2008

Or,
USA, MI, Bay County: Need a permit to fish for crocs in the Saginaw Bay to keep for personal use.

There is a new law in Florida that requires permits and microchips for some pythons, anacondas, and nile monitors.

Red-eared sliders under 4in are prohibited now.

Yea that is a revision of the current laws that they hope will help them get a better handle on the species of concern in that state.

Here you go - this is FEDERAL!

Folks this is SERIOUS!!!! US Fish & Wildlife is proposing a ban of ALL SPECIES in the genera of Python, Boa & Eunectes. If this is passed, it will ban all interstate trade (that means buying & selling!) or importation of those genera (genera = plural for "genus") in the private sector.

Eunectes = Anacondas
Boa = includes ALL of the Boa constrictor species...yes, your Colombian boas, your red-tails, Argentine, Bolivian, Brazilian...anything whose scientific name starts with Boa constrictor...

And folks, the genus "Python" encompasses the following:

Ball pythons
Angolan pythons
Bloods & short-tails
Burms/rocks
Retics
Timors

This is SERIOUS! This is FOR REAL!!! It is time for us ALL to have a voice & make our feelings known in a polite, respectful yet FIRM way!

The time to act is NOW!!!!!!! If this goes through, herpetoculture as we know it is going to RADICALLY change, and NOT for the better! No more big reptile shows, because out-of-state vendors wouldn't be able to attend. No more buying your snakes from a breeder out of state. No more herpetoculture as it is right now!

Hi there to everyone the same thing about bans on exotics is happening way up here in Canada too. I live in BC. Canada and they just introduced Bill 29 Environmental (species and public protection) statutes act,2008
Well the I read the law or any law the government creates they seem to always use simular wording as in "they may raise taxes" , so this is why i think we have to stand together just in case after all if we prepare for the worst anything above that would not be so shocking or so bad. So I plan on going to the BCSPCA symposium on May 28 & 29/08 this in Vancouver so that i will be more imformed on exactically what will happen.
If you read the submission put forward by the BCSPCA what did they ask for

Page 6 Be prohibited to breed or traffick the animal(s) in their possession.
Page 7 To futher ensure effective regulation of exotic species to prohibit in-province in-tansit and out-of-province transport of exotic animals.

what did the gov't put into bill 29
(a) the possession of a species individual of a controlled alien species;
(b) the breeding of controlled alien species;
(c) the release of a species individual of a controlled alien species;
(d) trafficking in species individuals of a controlled alien species;
(e) the shipping or transporting in British Columbia of, or the engaging of another person to ship or transport in British Columbia, a species individual of a controlled alien species.

The only difference is the wording in calling exotic animals by the BCSPCA To controlled alien species by the Gov't ...

in 6.4 If the minister considers that a non-native species described in paragraph (a) or (b) of the definition of "species" poses a risk to the health or safety of any person or poses a risk to property, wildlife or wildlife habitat, the minister may make regulations designating the species as a controlled alien species.

Lets see non-native species are not from BC. exotic animals Are not from BC. so to me the meaning is exactically the same just a small change of words.
In our law they may be including all boids, testudines, varanidae and venomous invertebrates. real serious stuff many thousands of jobs will be lost this will affect everyone every where.
