Why do you feel the need to "mix it up a little"? If your ball python is eating rodents no problem I don't see a reason to change things...rodents cover all of their nutritional needs just fine.

And if you do feed birds be ready for the grossest waste you've ever seen....that rodent hair is really good for holding the "stuff" together...bird feathers...not so much.

Yea, snakes that eat mostly birds are supposed to have some NASTY poo. But to answer the original question, I am sure a bp could take a quail, if hey recognized it as food that is... and it would suck if they refused to eat anything but quail. Nasty poo for life!

Foul tends to be for arboreal species, and Ball pythons being terrestrial feed on rodents. I am sure you could feed them quail but why would you. I think you are asking for trouble feeding quail chicks ect. What if it likes quail so much it will not take rodents again then you are stuck buying quail which there are far less suppliers of. Just a little food for thought

    Re: Ball python and quail

As it has been explained to me birds are like crack to snakes.... I have a dumeril's boa that was started on quail and I have been having a heck of a time getting him switched. Mice or rats are much better and more nutritious food for your BP.

My advice... don't even mess with the quail.

PS... The Dum eats birds and no nasty pooos... nothing worse than the mouse fed BP's. Actually with the quail it seems his poos aren't as big as the bps. Maybe cause they are so tiny and less fat and what not? Dunno but I still would like to see the boa switched over soon.... He needs to stop being so stubborn or I am going to have to get him into a 12 step program or something.

    Re: Ball python and quail

This is an old post but i want to write my observations about feeding quail to my collection.
Firstly i live in İstanbul and theres no rodent supplie in möy country so you have to breed them and theres a lot of quail supplier.
1 ball python (new born) and 1 bci (new born) i only gave them quail.
1 ball python (new born) and 1 bci (new born) i only gave them mice.

After 6 months later i saw that eating quail snakes bigger than who ate mice.
Also when they get adult ball python gave huge clutch who eats quail.

After 6 months later i saw that female bci much larger and longer than the other rat eater sister.

Quail is not flying bird and their population is all over the world and i think that balls and boa's feeding birds more than rats. (all documentry scenes you see that snakes eat birds).

I agree about poo is very bad but i use aspen bedding and theres no big problem for me..

If you change the food type of any creature the 'waste product' is likely to be different in some way ..

    That is fascinating !!

I know many say that Rats are far better nutritionally than mice and quote it as gospel YET there's plenty of data suggesting they're nearly identical..

I offer quail and a variety of prey to my snakes, the bp has never taken anything except rats/mice, he's just not interested. I've never noticed odd poop from feeding birds either but they don't eat them every week, it's a once in awhile thing.
