hes being active.. whats up with him?

    could it really be nothing?

ambient cool side is 78.9, humidity is 66% and warm side is 93.0, temps are solid with no fluxuations, he ate on 8-14 (we feed every 5dys) and hes actually being active! hes looking around, lounging on the log, was drinking earlier and i just changed his newspaper substrate (What actually helped me get his humidity down!) this morning after finding some lovely urates (sp?) coul dhe just be acting curious since its nightime? savanna was doing it earlier but now shes hiding. their temps are identical, substrates, feeding schedule, exc same..soo?

Re: hes being active.. whats up with him?

If you're feeding every 5 days, then he gets fed tomorrow... Is there any possibility he can smell the rats from where he is?? If he can, and he's doing it at night maybe he's just trying to find his dinner!

It definately doesn't sound like it's caused by any sort of poor husbandry, congrats on getting everything sorted out so well!

lol, you two are funny! i do know they are due to eat tomorrow and yes, im sure they can smell the rats seeing as they are within 200ft from their enclosure, they cant see each other but they are sort of in the same room (no door seperating dining room and living room) hmm.. maybe its just unusual for caution as he always lives up to his name.. i cant wait to help him gain some weight already!

200 ft? i don't think snakes can smell 200 feet away. maybe 20 feet....

unless that was a typo? in that case nevermind.

Re: hes being active.. whats up with him?

Ashley, it's perfectly normal for any snake to start looking for food the day before feeding day. Even if there's no prey smell present they will start searching around, lurking out of their hides, that sort of thing. Perfectly normal, a sign of a snake involved and aware of it's surroundings and getting ready to gear up to a good hunt. Usually once ours are in this "zone", we don't bother them at all as they have a tendency to be a bit more snappy and reactive (and that's not fun with some of our big females LOL).

Re: hes being active.. whats up with him?

You should see our place on Tuesday night and all day Wednesday (Wednesday is feeding night around the ole homestead). Whole bunch of very determined looking snakes. All peeking out of their hides (lurking), skulking around the side of their hides or out in plain sight in full coil just waiting for their lovely warm dinners to arrive. It's hilarious to see big Brannagh or Orlah in this posture and then go look at little tiny Darra or Kennis doing basically the same thing.

The really funny ones are the snakes that have figured out just how their tubs open up. They park themselves right at the area that will open first so they can't miss out on dinnertime LOL. Makes it tough on us though as we always place live prey away from the snake so have to avoid these smart ones!
