Congrats on your new ball python but about your heat rock, if you just turn it on and feel it randomly it might not feel too hot to burn but they can get so hot that it will definetely burn if you dont watch out. I suggest you get a head pad as soon as you can it is definetly important.

Hi,
My suggestion would be to do a search for the phrase "heat rock" pick the best threads explaining how dangerous hey are then make your dad read them.
$10-$20 for flexwatt from rich at repltile basics plus $70-120 for a very reliable thermostat is a heck of a lot less expensive than a course of vetinary treatment to cure an injured animal or replace a dead one.
The main thing to watch out for withn the heatrock is that it can deleop hot spots on its surface hot enough to burn your new pet.

Definitely get rid of the heat rock. They are well documented to cause burns and won't do much for your ambient heat.
Regarding the waterbowl, if your humidity is good, they don't need to soak. The only time I've seen one of mine soak was a new kid who had mites. Got rid of the mites and he quit soaking.
The rest of your set-up sounds okay. Just make sure you have a way to monitor the temps at both ends and the overall humidity. The Accurite digital thermometer/hygrometers sold at Wal-Mart and Lowes are cheap and work very well.
