    Quick shedding question

I just came home from work, lifted up my snakes hide, and see the skin of his head hanging behind his neck. I thought wow I just got him and I get to see him shed for the first time. Well he really got going when i lifted up the hide and started using his repti-bark to help get it off. It was going good until about 3 inches down his neck when the first piece broke off. Now he is having some extreme difficultly getting it off. Do you think it would be ok for me to help him out by getting him out and soaking him while having him go through my towel or should I just let him be?

    Re: Quick shedding question

    Hi,

I would just mist his tank lightly (not the snake just the tank around him) and let him get on with it.

You only need to soak if they have tried for a few days and just can't get it off.

And it's a great thing to watch isn't it.

    Re: Quick shedding question

I've done it before and here's what I did...

I dampened a towel , luke warm, and held the towel in my hand then closed my hand around the snake...and then let the snake wiggle his way through the wet towel...works very well

    Re: Quick shedding question

try misting the enclosure so the humidity rises. if after 24 hours it still has pieces left of shedding, proceed to put in a tub with warm water for an hour and then let it run though a wet towel so any stuck skin can come off.

    Re: Quick shedding question

I decided to help him out since it appeared he lost hope and was going back to sleep lol. I just filled my sink with luke warm water and let him swim a bit, started working from where he left off and we got the entire shed off in about 3 minutes. He was even working with me rubbing against my hands and moving when he could tell that his skin was coming off. He looks so beautiful and shiny now. ty

    Re: Quick shedding question

It's always nice when a shed goes well, even if you have to help a bit with it. Next time do try and let the snake accomplish it himself though if at all possible. One of ours seems to think my husband is a shedding assist for her though. Anytime Kyna's near shed, if Mike has her out, she just happily scrubs along his skin pulling hers off in the process. I'll have to try and get a video of that one day. It's rather funny (scuse me, coming through, don't mind the dead skin, scuse me).
