    funny looking urate?

i have never had the chance to see a fresh urate before and i was cleaning it out and i noticed its very wet and it has a dark colored jelly looking substance attached to it. Is this normal or can this be something bad? I have never seen it from either of my snakes before. i will try to get a pic but my camera sucks.

You see the damnest things come out of snakes. Urates have green and black and other weird stuff with them sometimes. As long as it ain't blood you should be cool.

    Re: funny looking urate?

I've never seen this on mine but I did see a big boa's fresh bizness at the pet store once. He had a urate ball and a poop, each of which were about the size of a small lime. The whole thing was quite disgusting because there was this yellow slime that kind of bonded the whole thing together.

Maybe your snake needs some more water. Previously, I had mine BP's hide too warm and he never peed - only urate balls. Now that its cooler he discharges some serious fluid in addition to the urates. I wonder if maybe he wasn't partially dehydrated before.

Well, I'm guessing something like what you get when you open a can of Spam or see around a baked chicked or turkey dish after its been in the fridge. Those (I think) are lightweight fats mixed with water.

If it melts quickly with heat (like butter) then its definately fat. If not then I would guess its protein based and (possibly) more serious.

Not to scare you, something that can congeal and is dark-brown or black is blood. I believe congealed blood is protein based and would behave more like jello than fat under heat.
