    Re: Herping? A few questions

Ya, there are LOTS of tunnels in the area under the sandy soil that I believe either belong to snakes, toads, or rodents.

Its about a 15 minute walk from the house to this place. I have been in this area all my life(granny lives up the street about 3 houses and we just moved here) and I never knew this stream was there.

I believe there may be some sort of rattle snake population in the area but thats it. Not 100% on that yet

    Re: Herping? A few questions

I'm gonna try hard today. Its not supposed to get terribly warm so I plan to spend most of the day out. I'm really looking for rock formations in the grassy fields as well as wooded areas where the Massasauga is found near water. Wish me luck today!

    Also on my list is....
    Western Ribbon Snake
    Racer
    Prairie king snake
    Nothern watersnake
    Milk snake
    Lined snake
    Graham's Crayfish Snake
    Fox snake
    Bull snake
    Eastern hognose
    Brown snake
    and some more black rats

Lets see how many I can find by the end of the summer

Thanks Mike. The page that shows lizards and salamanders is down so I can't look at those just yet. I'll probably head out at about 8:30 or so and get going.

I think that you need to take your camera and get out there!

    Re: Herping? A few questions

Well that sucked. I walked about 8 miles to the flood plains of the river in hopes of finding something out there. Guess what....NOTHING!!! I spent 3 1/2 hours walking around and all I did was loose my shoes in the mud and have to walk back 10 miles barefoot. I walked about 7-8 of the 15 miles in thick disiduous(sp?) forest along the bank of a marsh flipping over anything I could physically move on my own. Didn't even see any frogs. Just a bunch of tadpoles again. This was a 7-8 mile walk just getting to where the marshy area stats mind you. I did snap a few pics on the camera of the flood plains and the forested areas. Pretty cool stuff but no snakes!?!?! Any other ideas?

    Re: Herping? A few questions

    Herping is funny like that.

I live 15 minutes out of Boston and the place I go to was flooded with garters and brown snakes. This place is called the rat trails to the locals here and sadly people throw everything and anything from stoves, AC's, couches you name it in this place. Bad for polution but great for snakes. This field runs along side an open sewer system. This past Sunday I took my son there and I lost count of how many snakes we found. Every single thing I turned over either had a garter, a brown or a mouse nest some of which had little pinkys in them. I will go again this coming weekend and take some pics for everyone.

    Re: Herping? A few questions

Is there any kind of road (dirt, gravel, paved) that runs close to the marshy area? Could do some road cruising at night if there is.
